Plessis-Bourré Castle
The Château du Plessis-Bourré is a magnificent building combining medieval rigor and Renaissance elegance. Built in just five years (1468-1473), it testifies to the wealth and largesse of its owner Jean Bourré. Confidant of Louis XI, Grand Treasurer of the King.
Plessis-Macé Castle
Built in the 13th century, this black slate and schist fortification was transformed into a large country house in the 15th century. The castle has a flamboyant Gothic style which is reflected in its impressive tuffeau (limestone) stone balcony and chapel (containing a rare Gothic gallery). Visitors will appreciate the contrast between the elegant stately home and the remains of the medieval fortress.
Angers Castle
The Château d’Angers, founded in 1230, is an imposing fortress with its 17 majestic towers. During the 14th and 15th centuries, it was the location of the court of the Dukes of Anjou. The castle hosts a tapestry museum, highlighting the famous Apocalypse Tapestry, an exceptional medieval work exceptional for its dimensions, its age and its remarkable craftsmanship.
